Medical laboratory sciences, which was previously taught under the name of medical technology in the universities across the world, was renamed Medical Laboratory Sciences in 1976 by the National Credentialing Agency, so that this field of study is now called Medical Laboratory Sciences or Clinical Laboratory Sciences. It is mainly argued that the new name better describes the professional duties of the professionals in this branch, namely, laboratory sciences officers (MLSOs).

During the past few decades, clinical and health laboratories have turned from small units with a few simple devices and traditional methods of chemical physics into large centers with highly advanced equipment and numerous branches.

These dramatic and rapid changes require employees who, in addition to being equipped with the facilities of modern knowledge, would be able to use sophisticated electronic and computer equipment and devices and perform new diagnostic and molecular methods. Therefore, the prospects of the labor market for trained and skilled experts in medical laboratory sciences are obvious with respect to the evolution of clinical and health laboratories and factories of laboratory materials and equipment.

The purpose of the bachelor’s program on medical laboratory sciences is to train would-be professionals who are expert in delivering laboratory services. In this program, the students are given the necessary general and specific education so that, in addition to acquiring a sufficient knowledge about man and his/her culture and environment, they would be able to carry out basic and routine tests in health and clinical laboratories and meet the needs of the society related to clinical laboratory services and the laboratory services needed by the health centers, which are essential for disease prevention and health maintenance.

The new principles and techniques of teaching and learning methods should be used in the theoretical-practical field and apprenticeship in this branch. Graduates should be able to satisfy the needs of society in various fields of research, services and manufacturing as well as laboratory services.
